Common Questions

Q: What do you do in a lesson?

A: The Alexander Technique is first and foremost a learning process. I will use questions, stories, practical demonstrations and some gentle manipulation in order to help you transcend the psycho-physical limitations that have come to define normal for you. Through this, we can begin to tease apart the threads of the web of ideas and beliefs that have been holding you back, and uncover simpler solutions.

At first we'll work on relatively simple activities such as sitting or standing, but then move on to investigate other activites in order that you can work on anything that is of special interest to you. My job is to help you reason out the best way to achieve your goals in the things that you love to do.

Q: Do I need to wear anything special, like exercise clothes?
A: Not at all. Wear whatever feels comfortable.

Q: How many lessons will I need?
A: This will depend on a number of factors; for example, the size and scope of your goals, the severity of the symptoms you experience, or your ability to commit to learning Alexander's ideas.

When you come for your introductory lesson, I will spend some time with you constructing a custom-made plan to help you reach your goals most effectively. Frequently this begins with a series of 6 lessons, as this enables us to cover some basic foundational work, but this will depend entirely on the situation of each student.

Q: I'm a bit nervous. Can I bring a friend?
A: Of course! They can join in the lesson, if they wish.

Q: Can children have Alexander Technique lessons?
A: Absolutely. I have experience teaching children, both privately and in school settings, and have seen really positive changes happen in their movement, their flexibility and their lives generally.
I recommend that a parent or carer remains in the room during the lesson. For your reassurance, you are welcome to check my CRB Disclosure, and to read the ITM Teachers' Association Child and Vulnerable Adult Good Practice Policy, which I uphold.

Q: I'd like to read up a little. What do you recommend?

A: If you contact me, I can send you a short factsheet that will give you a little more information about the Technique. Failing that, you could take a look at www.alexandertechnique.com. It's a site chock-full of information and articles from many different viewpoints.

Q: I really want to come, but I'm not sure I can afford it. What should I do?

A: It's really tricky when we're forced to choose between our finances and our physical wellbeing. All I can advise is that you give me a call, and we'll see if we can work out a solution that helps you to reach your goals.
